Review | Kocaze | D’Or & de Sang EP [Kocaze]

Emerging from Liège’s shadowy musical depths, Belgian duo Kocaze, comprised of Elsa Verhoeven (vocals/piano) and Olivier Jacqmin (guitar/vocals), return with their deeply anticipated release, D’Or & de Sang. Following the ethereal melancholy of The Drift (2020) and the introspective tones of Aboyer en silence (2024), this new work continues their exploration of dark-pop infused with neoclassical and doom-gaze sensibilities.

Drawing on the tension between Elsa’s classical training and Olivier’s instinct-driven creativity, D’Or & de Sang crafts an immersive sonic world—where piano, guitar, and atmospheric samples weave around haunting, layered vocals. The tracks lead listeners through cinematic landscapes steeped in emotional gravity, exploring motifs of beauty (“d’or” – gold) juxtaposed with visceral human experiences (“de sang” – blood).

While production credits for this release remain forthcoming, Kocaze’s past collaborations with industry talents like Ben Chisholm (Chelsea Wolfe) and mastering engineer Alan Douches set high expectations. The result is a richly textured soundscape, blending lush arrangements with a hard-hitting emotional core.
